Today’s DOTD - Drink Of The Day - is an Arizona Breeze cocktail, inspired by The London Bridge moving to Arizona?? WHAT??
On this date, October 10, 1971, the town of Lake Havasu City in Arizona debuted a new old bridge - specifically, the third version of the London Bridge.
There’s been a bridge crossing the river Thames in London since the city was called “Londinium” by the Romans in 43 BCE. That first Roman version of the London Bridge was replaced with a second bridge in 1209, and then replaced for a third time with a bridge designed by legendary Scottish civil engineer John Rennie in 1831. When that third version of the London Bridge began sinking into the riverbed in 1967, due to the weight of increasing car traffic, London made plans to replace the bridge again.
Instead of allowing the bridge to be demolished, Arizona entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch bought it for almost two and a half million dollars - which would be close to $23.5 million dollars today, in 2025. He then had the individually numbered stones shipped from the dismantled bridge in London all the way to Lake Havasu City, Arizona - a city he founded & created - and then reassembled.
The rebuilt London Bridge was placed over a local canal, in a project which took four years to complete. Visitors can now enjoy a 90-minute tour of the bridge, taking in the legendary architecture, & even strafing scars from World War II. The “Rennie” version of the London Bridge is now second only to the Grand Canyon as a tourist attraction in Arizona.
All that talk of bridges & rivers has us thirsty - so it’s a good time to take a break and enjoy a smooth Arizona Breeze cocktail.
