Today’s DOTD (Drink Of The Day) will bring all the boys to the yard - and likely everyone else too, because it’s a chocolate milkshake drink called Death By Chocolate, inspired by National Chocolate Milkshake Day!
The history of the chocolate milkshake is simple. In 1922, a Chicago Walgreens employee, Ivar 'Pop' Coulson, was inspired to add two scoops of ice cream to an old-fashioned chocolate malted milk, and in doing so, invented the chocolate milkshake that we know and love today.
Prior to this, a milkshake was actually an alcoholic concoction of cream, eggs, and whiskey - an eggnog of sorts - served as a tonic by pharmacists. But after Coulson's discovery, and the invention of the electric blender, the more wholesome, alcohol-free version of the milkshake became a hit in burger joints and diners across the USA.
Today’s DOTD is a bit less wholesome, and a bit more like singer, songwriter - and chef - Kelis sang in her 2003 hit song Milkshake: “Damn right - it’s better than yours.”
