Today’s DOTD - Drink Of The Day - is a Hawaiian Stone Sour inspired by Hawaii becoming the 50th State, on this date, August 21, 66 years ago today.
Some 2,000 miles west of California in the Pacific Ocean lies the land of surfing, hula dancers, lūʻaus, and poké bowls. We are, of course, talking about Hawaii, where Jody used to live!
On this day in 1959, this group of breathtaking volcanic islands became the 50th U.S. state, now affectionately known as the 'Aloha State'.
Hawaii was first inhabited by Polynesian voyagers, who used only the stars for navigation and outrigger canoes to make their journeys. It was later rediscovered by British explorer Captain James Cook, when he landed at Waimea Bay on the island of Kauai on January 20, 1778. In the years that followed Cook's rediscovery, Hawaii would see the fall of its monarchy, annexation of the islands as U.S. territory, and finally U.S. statehood some 60 years later.
Hawaii's path to statehood was fraught and prolonged; we won't dwell on that here. Instead, we'd rather entertain you with some fun facts about the place Mark Twain called, "the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean."
Fun facts about Hawaii
Hawaii boasts the largest dormant volcano in the world, Maui's Mount Haleakala.
More than a third of the world's supply of pineapples comes from the Hawaiian islands.
Hawaii is the only U.S. state with two official languages, English & Hawaiian.
Only seven of Hawaii's 132 islands are permanently inhabited.
You can mail a coconut from Hawaii - no joke. Just add an address, and enough postage to get it there, and pop it in the mail.
Hawaiians commonly greet with a hug, not just a handshake. They're generally a friendly bunch.
With all that in mind, we're celebrating this jewel of the Pacific, one of Jody’s favorite places in the world, with our Drink Of The Day, the Hawaiian Stone Sour. We’re particularly thinking of those who suffered from the wildfires in Maui, on Lahaina, two years ago, as they continue to rebuild their town, their homes, & their lives.
