Today’s DOTD - Drink Of The Day - is a Navy Grog is inspired by the final “Black Tot Day” of the British Royal Navy, which happened on this date in 1970.
For 315 years, starting in 1655, the Royal British Navy had supplied their sailors with a daily ration of rum. They originally chose rum because - unlike water or beer - rum didn’t grow algae when stored for long periods on ships at sea. That ration of rum became known as "the daily tot” - and so, of course, it’s end is marked as “Black Tot Day,” and is traditionally celebrated with rum drinks.
