Celebrating A Big Bang, With A Banger Of A Drink

Today’s DOTD - Drink Of The Day - is a Harvey Wallbanger, inspired by the loudest explosion ever. Just after 10 AM local time on August 27, 1883, in what is today Indonesia, the magma chamber below the volcanic island of Krakatoa exploded. Scientists believe that explosion had over 25 times the power of the biggest nuclear explosions in human history.

Reports of the event say the sea rushed in, sucking ships towards it. Then the half-mile high peak of the volcano collapsed into the sea, sending tsunami waves at least 100 feet high rushing towards coastlines throughout the region, obliterating villages and killing at least 36,000 people.

The noise of the explosion was reportedly so loud it was audible over at least a third of the globe, and may have circled the globe 4 times. Reports from Alice Springs, Australia - 2200 miles away - say it sounded like the "roar of heavy guns."

So much ash was thrown up in the sky that temperatures worldwide were disrupted for five whole years, and there were pumice islands in the sea for many months.

In honor of this massively explosive bang – and in the hope that Earth doesn't get another one like it for a very long time – today’s DOTD is a real banger, the sometimes maligned but really rather fabulous 1960’s drink, the Harvey Wallbanger.
