Today’s DOTD - Drink Of The Day - is called a Hanky Panky inspired by the opening of the Savoy Hotel in London on this date in 1889, the first purpose-built deluxe hotel in London. It was built by hotel & entertainment impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte, with profits from his Gilbert and Sullivan opera productions, at the Savoy Theatre, just down the street.
The Savoy Hotel was the first hotel in England to introduce electric lighting throughout the building, electric elevators, and bathrooms in most of the lavishly furnished rooms that had constant hot and cold running water. As part of the hotel’s top-notch design, D'Oyly Carte hired the best bartenders in London, and proceeded to open The American Bar - where the Hanky Panky was one of the signature drinks.
