A Drink For The Speedy Fokker In All Of Us
Today’s DOTD - Drink Of The Day - is a Biggles Sidecar inspired by three pilots, the first pilot, Commander Andy Green, who set the land speed record on this day in 1997 in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.
Green, a British Royal Air Force fighter pilot, reached a land speed of 763 mph (1,228 km/h) in his Thrust Supersonic Car (ThrustSSC for short). By doing so, Green also became the first human to break the land speed sound barrier. His record was set 50 years and one day after legendary U.S. Air Force pilot Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier in the Earth’s atmosphere.
Commander Green’s British built jet-propelled car was powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, the same engine used in the British version of the F-4 Phantom Il jet fighter. This record-breaking car is now on display at the Transport Museum in Coventry, England.
So why is this drink not called a “Green’s Rocket,” after pilot Andy Green?
The Biggles’ Sidecar was created by legendary English spirits industry writer and publisher Simon Difford, in 2008 as an homage to one of his favorite childhood heroes, the second pilot we referenced, Capt. James Charles Bigglesworth.
Bigglesworth, nicknamed “Biggles“, was a fictional pilot and adventurer, who fought the fascists in both WWI & WWII, and was brought into existence by the third pilot e noted, writer W. E. Johns, who was also a pilot in World War I.
Johns’ character Biggles seemed to know how to fly almost every kind of plane, from early biplanes like the Sopwith Camel and the de Havilland Gipsy Moth, to iconic WWII fighters like the Hawker Hurricane. Biggles even knew how to fly enemy planes, like the Fokker Dr.I, the plane most often associated with the “Red Baron”
In fact, Biggles’ first appearance was in a story titled “The White Fokker” - which, while unrelated, does make us think of the MAGA Young Republicans just discovered being racist & joking about gas chambers, slavery, & rape.
But enough about those Fokkers.
Let’s get to the Drink Of The Day, the Biggles’ Sidecar!
