The solar panels installed on the White House by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 were water-type solar thermal collectors, not photovoltaic (electrical) panels.
These 32 panels were designed to heat water for the West Wing and household, rather than generate electricity.
They remained until 1986, when they were removed by the Reagan administration.
